France vs Germany live: Euro 2020 result as Mats Hummels scored own goal - as it happened

France got their Euro 2020 campaign off to a winning start after beating Germany 1-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Mats Hummels' own goal was the difference between the two sides, but some scintillating French counter-attacks almost put the game beyond Germany.

Kylian Mbappe was twice deemed offside by the linesman as the Germans fought for an equaliser which never came.

For more detail, you can our debrief of the game here.

Captain Lloris gives his verdict on the win

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 11:41 م EET

Speaking to M6 (via UEFA.com) the skipper had this to say: "The main thing was taking the three points. We really played as a team. We suffered especially in the second half when they held onto the ball and got it wide. We did the most important thing and we must savour that.

"Without the ball we were good in both halves and we needed everybody to defend. We were really solid in our final third."

Kylian Mbappe - the jewel in France’s crown

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 11:39 م EET

While he never scored tonight, Mbappe's presence was certainly felt by those German defenders. Running in from the left as he does so devilishly with those turbo-charged feet of his.

To get an insight into how a player like that develops into what we saw tonight, have a read of Amy Lawrence's piece on the 22-year-old as part of The Athletic's 10 Euro stars series.

UEFA's 'star of the match' Pogba speaks after the game

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 11:24 م EET

Speaking to M6 (via UEFA.com) Pogba said: "The team performance is the most important thing. Without them, I wouldn't have played as well. We all put the effort in.

"We're focused on our jobs on the pitch. We know we need to live up to our tag as world champions and come out on to the pitch with humility. When we need to suffer, we do it together and when we attack, we do it together."

Deschamps seems satisfied with the win

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 11:17 م EET

Speaking after the game, the France manager said to M6 (via UEFA.com): "We played a great game against very good opponents. I knew my players would be ready and we were up for the fight.

"We weren't far away from scoring the second goal that would have made us safe, but we didn't suffer that much in the second half. It was a strong match with quality and talent."

Full-time! France 1-0 Germany

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 11:01 م EET

And with the final whistle, Germany's defeat is confirmed. France, even without scoring, managed to get the better of Joachim Low's side - but it was far from comfortable.

Germany gained some momentum in the second half, but France's threat on the counter proved a little too much for the German defence to handle at times even if they resulted in offside calls.

Still, Germany can be slightly encouraged by their performance tonight despite the result. They managed to get their attack ticking for significant periods and tested a resolute French defence more than many would have expected them to.

With France out the way, the rest of the 'group of death' should get easier for them.

Benzema scores but it's ruled out for offside again!

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 10:44 م EET

86 mins - France 1-0 Germany: So unlucky for France, who thought they'd wrapped this game up but for the linesman's flag again.

Mbappe was offside when Pogba played his pass through to him, and the PSG striker squared it to Benzema in the centre who made no mistake with his finish.

Still the one goal in this.

Mbappe is lightening quick, isn't he?

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 10:39 م EET

81 mins - France 1-0 Germany: That French counter-attack will be a danger as long as Mbappe is on the pitch. Why? Because he can run at the speed of sound.

Knowing this, Benzema sent a flick beyond Mats Hummels which would be an aimless pass for many recipients. But not Kylian, who raced past Hummels as if he wasn't there, but the German defender recovered well with a slide tackle to stop Mbappe from unleashing a shot.

Didn't look the cleanest of tackles, I must say.

Mbappe scores beautifully but it's ruled offside

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 10:27 م EET

68 mins - France 1-0 Germany: Mbappe receives the ball on the left, jinks inside once, twice and then curls his shot perfectly into the bottom corner, despite Kimmich and Ginter seemingly covering that side.

But as the Frenchman wheeled away in celebration, the lineman's flag ruined his party.

Don't worry though, that'll probably only anger him to score an even better goal.

Germany go close as Pavard receives treatment

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 10:18 م EET

60 mins - France 1-0 Germany: Germany really growing into this game now, getting some slick passing moves to connect and threaten France's back line.

Kimmich's cross is headed away by Pavard who takes a hit from the onrushing Gosens. The resulting shot hit Gosens, who was in an offside position, in the face and the attack fizzled out.

Getting tense now, finally.

Gnabry volleys over

Half-time! France 1-0 Germany

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:49 م EET

Not much to separate these two in the first half. A moment of madness from Hummels after a moment of brilliance from Pogba the only difference.

Now these two have finished sizing each other up, the second half might actually get underway in the manner we all hoped!

Here's hoping we get counters galore in the next 45.

Pogba and Kante enjoying themselves so far

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:44 م EET

44 mins - France 1-0 Germany: Kante's timing in the challenge has been nothing short of inevitable this half, whether he's pressing loose German passes from the front or shuttling in front of his defence.

Pogba, meanwhile, loves a line-breaking pass and is trying his best show us exactly how much he revels in being his side's creative spark.

Gundogan scuffs his shot wide

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:40 م EET

39 mins - France 1-0 Germany: Gosens' deflected cross was hooked on by Gnabry before Gundogan, making a run into the penalty box, did not get the contact on his strike and the ball bobbles wide.

Germany will have to take one of these chances or risk France sucker-punching them on the break.

France much more reserved than their star-studded line up suggests

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:33 م EET

32 mins - France 1-0 Germany: With the likes of Pogba, Kante, Griezmann and Mbappe, you'd expect more of a punch from this French team. But that's not how they operate.

And it's certainly not how they won the World Cup in 2018. They will use their energy when their opponents are vulnerable and that's been key to their success on the international stage.

GOAL! France lead

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:23 م EET

21 mins - France 1-0 Germany: Pogba's deliciously lofted pass with the outside of his foot found Hernandez on the left, whose cross was turned in to his own net rather spectacularly by defender Mats Hummels.

There were three own goals across the last two international tournaments, but there have already been three in this tournament so far.

Mbappe forces a save from Neuer

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 9:19 م EET

18 mins - France 0-0 Germany: Mbappe cuts inside onto his right foot in familiar style, but his shot lacked the direction to test German captain Neuer, who fists it away from danger.

11 mins - France 0-0 Germany: Gosens and Kimmich are positioned high and wide but are unmarked by French defenders.

Whenever Germany's midfielders looks to spray the ball out to them, they are harried by French midfielders and forced to play it safe back to their defence.

Quite the chess match this is turning out to be.

Looks set to an intriguing tactical battle...

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 8:33 م EET

It looks as though France will play with a midfield diamond and look to dominate the centre of the pitch.

Whereas Germany's 3-4-3 formation gives them strength out wide through their wing backs Kimmich and Gosens.

Can Germany stretch France's shape and exploit the gaps in between or will Deschamp's side win the midfield battle?

We shall find out in just under half an hour!

Why was Benzema not been selected for France in the last six years?

By Ahmed Shooble

Karim Benzema’s inclusion into France’s Euro 2020 squad has been welcomed with open arms by the majority of French fans.

But why hasn’t Deschamps picked him since August 2015?

If you like your explainers in video form, Seb Stafford-Bloor from Tifo Football explains how a sex tape, blackmail of a team-mate, and a court case has prevented him from playing.

Gosens starts for Germany, but who is he?

Gosens starts for Germany, but who is he?

Among all the more recognisable German names in that starting line up is Robin Gosens who will line up at left wing back in tonight's game.

The Atalanta man bagged 11 goals and six assists in Serie A last season and is expected to provide some dynamism down Germany's left flank which they have missed for a number of years.

For a deeper look at what Gosens can do this summer, check out The Radar, our Euro 2020 scouting guide which provides in-depth analysis of the players your club should be watching.

How can Germany bounce back?

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 7:43 م EET

After elimination from the World Cup group stages for the first time since 1938, Joachim Low and Germany have been on a rocky road to redemption.

Caught between two generations of German talent, this will be Low’s last chance to successfully blend the youthful exuberance of Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala with the return of the seasoned Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller.

For all the background, insight on what tactics to expect, which players to look out for and the correct way to pronounce the names of players you’ve probably been mispronouncing for years, have a gander through our lowdown on Germany at the Euros.

Emmanuel Petit: I love Kante the player more than Kante the person

By Ahmed Shooble

15 يونيو 2021 at 7:28 م EET

There are a few parallels between this French team and the one from 1998-2000. The first (and most obvious) comparison is that both teams are very, very good.

But this French team also has the chance to conquer Europe just two years after winning the World Cup – something the 1998 French team achieved in 2000 with Emmanuel Petit present.

As far as he’s concerned, this French team, powered by Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, has all the quality needed to repeat history.

Have a read of his interview with Amy Lawrence below to find out why he loves Kante the player more than Kante the man.
